Recording New Album

Frank and Jef and other collaborators have started laying the bed tracks for a new album. I love this phase of creation, when many things are added and shaped by many hands and imaginations.  I trust this process — of people coming together with a will to make something that was nothing the best thing that it can be.

The stock came in today of the new book of poems, What Remains. It looks lovely.  It’s a book about the wily nature of love, redemption, the austere trek we have to tread once our parents have passed.

pattinase: Say Something Good about Detroit: HOORAY FOR lOVE AND THE CADIEUX CAFE

Here’s a great post about the Cadieux Cafe and our CD release party from my friend and wonderful author Patti Nase Abbott.  I admire her blog a great deal. She writes brilliant crime short fiction, and she dedicates space each week to bringing attention to forgotten books.  I share that passion with her in my scholarly work.  Thank you Patti for attending the event and for writing about it.

One of Many Debts to Sojourner Truth

If my cup won’t hold but a pint, and yours holds a quart, wouldn’t you be mean not to let me have my little half measure full? – Sojourner Truth,  ”Aint I a Woman?”  Speech delivered in 1851 at the Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio.

In Black Hat’s song “Matthew Said” we adapted these lines from Truth’s great speech.  The song addresses disparity of wealth broadly, whereas Truth’s words were directed at prejudices of race and gender.  Our song is a response to austerity as we see it unfolding in Michigan in the last few years.  I’m providing a link to the song.

The extraordinary performance on trumpet is James O’Donnell, bass guitar is Jef Reynolds, on drums is Bill Hulet.  When putting down the bed track, Bill added a lot to the song by introducing the march cadence and the powerful, explosive bass drum notes.  Frankie the K on keyboard and vocals, and I’m on vocals as well.

How can some people      Cm Ab Bb B Cm
Be so unkind?
How can they even
Have such a mind?
Don’t they know
There’s poor all around
While the rich they gain
More and more ground

I was hungry and you gave me food
I was thirsty and you gave me drink
I had no shelter and you said come on in
And you said, come right in

(But Instead) I had a job and you took it away  Cm Ab Bb B Cm
I was old and you made me pay
I was poor and you turned away
And blamed me for my plight every day

If I had a pint and you had a quart
Would you still feel you came up short?
Wouldn’t it be mean to take away mine
How could you go on feeling fine?

And you said, come right in Back to A.  End: Cm6/9

The Joy/Melancholia of the End of the Semester

We’re at the threshold of the end of the semester.  This is my third full semester of teaching creative writing.  I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to move into this subset of the profession.  So much happens in the last few weeks–long projects of student writing come to a close, portfolios are turned in–that it’s hard to see beyond the precipice of the next couple of weeks.  I have enjoyed getting to know my students and witness them choose important projects and solve the particular problems that creative writing presents.  I feel like my role is that of an accelerant. I add my will to the will they already bring and together, or all together since I teach in workshop-style, we transmit the energy to the page with more force than we might muster alone.

Beasts in a Populous City

This is a link to the blog of my friend Olivia Ambrogio.  She is a brilliant writer and photographer, and one of her photographs became the cover of our new CD (with her permission).  She lives near the National Zoo and has found a wealth of complexity there.  She also makes some of her photography available as cards and calendars. We’ve been enjoying the calendars we bought all year.  She blends humor, wit, and insight, and all of her photographs exude a sense that she has caught her subjects being completely themselves.
